This text is part of:
οὐχὶ ταὐτὰ . . . γιγνώσκειν, “to take a totally different view.” For the μείωσις, cf. i. § 9 (note). προήκοντα. Represents the same tense as προελήλυθεν, § 3. ὥστε . . . δέον=ὥστε δεῖ. But as the whole sentence is subordinate to ὁρῶ, which is followed by a participle, δεῖ follows suit. Cf. Goodw. M.T. 607 (a). Others, with less probability, understand ἐστί (δέον ἐστὶ=δεῖ). κακῶς, with πεισόμεθα. οὐδὲν ἄλλο . . . ἤ. Originally some such word as ποιεῖν would be expressed to govern οὐδὲν ἄλλο. But it has become almost an adverbial phrase, “merely.” τὴν ὑπόθεσιν, “the subject,” literally “groundwork.” Cf. the derivation of the word “subject.” οὐχὶ τὴν οὖσαν=ψευδῆ. ἁμαρτάνειν. Absolute, with παριστ. “to be at fault in. . . . ”
