Μαχάονα: cf. 2.731 f., 11.505 ff., 833 ff. Machaon and his brother Podalirius were the only professional surgeons in the Achaean camp, but both were leaders in battle as well as surgeons. The best surgery of those days was rude, and every man knew the elements of the art.
