[253] ‘Asyndeton.’ An amplification of 252.

Ἰδομενεύς: cf. “Α 145, Β” 405, 645 ff. Idomeneus was one of the older leaders, and was highly esteemed by Agamemnon. See on 1.145.

ἐνὶ προμάχοις: equiv. to “πρώτας”, corresponding to “πυμάτος” 254. sc. “ὤτρυνε φάλαγγας.—συῒ κτλ”.: for the comparison of a hero to a brute, see on 2.480, where Agamemnon is likened to an ox. Ajax also is likened to a wild boar, 17.281, and even to a stubborn ass, 11.558. cf. 5.783.

ἀλκήν: warlike spirit, in general.
