διέσχε: intrans., held its way, went through, so as to come out on the other side of the shoulder. cf. “δἰ ὤμου δ᾽ ὄβριμον ἔγχοςι ἔσχεν Ν” 519. Equiv. to “διῆλθε”.

τῷ δ᾽ ἐπί: and over him, i.e. Diomed. cf. “ἐπεύχεται” 119. The accent of “ἐπί” is not drawn back since it does not immediately follow the word with which it is construed. § 37 c.
