These verses picture the results of the lion's fury.κατὰ κτλ.: the herdsman hides in his hut and does not attempt further to defend his flocks (“οὐ προσαμύνει”). τὰ δ᾽ ἐρῆμα: “μῆλα” seems to have been in the poet's mind. For the accent of “ἐρῆμα”, see § 2 w. φοβεῖται: are driven, flee before the lion.
