[288] πρίν γε : sooner than. This “πρίν” is a conj., and corresponds to the adv. “πρίν” at the beginning of the verse. cf. 218, “οὐδ᾽ γε πρὶν Δαναοῖσιν ἀεικέα λοιγὸν ἀπώσει, πρίν γ̓ ἀπὸ πατρὶ φίλῳ δόμεναι ἑλικώπιδα κούρην Α” 97 f.

289 = “γ 78, Χ 267. — αἵματος ἆσαι”: paints the savage nature of Ares.

αἵματος: gen. of material, with a word of fulness.

ταλαύρινον (“ταλάϜρινος”): shield-bearing. See on “σακέσπαλος” 126. Epithet only of Ares.
