χαζώμεσθα: for the ending, see § 26 s.Διὸς κτλ.: Athena can hardly be in earnest here, since only at the beginning of “Θ” does Zeus forbid the gods to take part in the conflicts. This is only a pretext, but Ares seems to be persuaded that he must not interfere with whatever plans Zeus has in mind.
