[369] παρά: the tables of men stood beside them, not in front of them, in Homeric times. Thus “σῖτον παρέθηκε α” 139 is the natural expression for “placed food before him.” The terms are transferred to horses. cf. “ὑμῖν” (i.e. the horses of Hector) “πὰρ προτέροισι μελίφρονα πυρὸν” (wheat) “ἔθηκεν Θ” 188.
