= 12.425 f.ἀμφὶ στήθεσσι: const. with “βοείας”. βοείας (sc. “ἀσπίδας”): fem. adj. as subst., oxhide shields. This is the general term, with which “ἀσπίδας” and “λαισήια” are in partitive apposition. The shields were mainly of leather, though they frequently had an outer layer of bronze. cf., of the renowned shield of Ajax, 7.220 f., quoted on 619.
