[194] οἷ: dat., as is shown by the length of “μέν.

τέμενος: here, royal domain. Cf.Ι 578, Μ 313, Σ 550, Υ 184, 391, ζ” 293. Elsewhere, as in later Greek, of the land set apart for sacred uses. cf. templum. Connected in derivation with “τέμνω.

τάμον: i.e. set apart, marked off.

ἔξοχον ἄλλων: sc. in size and fertility. As in later times, much land was held in common, esp. for pastures, but private property in land seems to have been recognized.—cf. “ἔδωκε” (sc. Lycurgus to the Spartan kings) “δὲ καὶ γέρα ἀπὸ τῶν θυομένων λαμβάνειν, καὶ γῆν δὲ ἐν πολλαῖς τῶν περιοίκων πόλεων ἀπέδειξεν ἐξαίρετον” Xen. de Rep. Lac. xv. 3.
