me bello et tanto digressum et caede recenti | attrectare nefas donec me flumine vivo | abluero Verg. Aen. ii. 717 ff., ‘Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the Lord,’ Numbers xix. 13; ‘When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the Lord,’ Exodus xxx. 20.
