ἔτρεφε: bred, i.e. suffered to grow up. cf. “διοτρεφέεσσι Ε” 463.—This is strong language for Hector to use of his own brother, but cf. 325 ff., “αἴθ̓ ὄφελες ἄγονός <*>᾿ ἔμεναι ἄγαμός τ̓ ἀπολέσθαι Γ” 40 (Hector to Paris), and the wish of the old herald Idaeus “ὡς πρὶν ὤφελλ᾽ ἀπολέσθαι” (of Paris) 7.390.
