πολὺ περὶ μειζόνων: this order of words is more emphatic than the more usual περὶ πολὺ μειζόνων.

ὥρμησεν, ‘threw himself into the war.’ ὁρμᾶν can be used in the active either (1) transitively ‘to set in motion’, or (2), as here, intransitively ‘to set oneself in motion’.
