8. Ἀθηναίων δεομένῳ
—Them. must have opposed a request from Admetus for Athenian help.
9. καὶ γὰρ ἂν κτλ.
—for at the present time I might be ill-treated by one far weaker than you (ἐκείνου=ἢ ἐκεῖνος, depending on ἀσθενεστέρου); but it is generous (like a gentleman) to take vengeance on equals (not on inferiors) and when equal to them (and not stronger).
This curious form of appeal must be the invention of Thuc.; and we may doubt whether it would have moved such a king.
13. χρείας τινός
