1. ἐςἐλπίδα—ἐς is properly ‘bearing on,’ ‘tending to,’ as in λέγειντιεἰςτὸπρᾶγμα (Dem. 57.7) etc.
2. ἢνἐθέλητε—all this is prophetic, if, as is almost certain, it was really said by Pericles and not put into his mouth by Thuc. after the event.
