τοῖς ἐπιτηδ. καὶ ταῖς αὐτῶν ἐπιμελείαις ‘by their pursuits’ [the intellectual or physical exercises mentioned in § 45, as distinguished from the agricultural or commercial labours assigned to the poorer] ‘and by the careful watch kept over them’: αὐτῶν, τῶν νεωτέρων, not τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων: the v. l. αὑτῶν would mean ‘the care exercised by themselves’ (the Areopagites).

τοὺς δὲ πρεσβυτέρους...ταῖς τιμαῖς Isocr. tacitly refers to a time when the archons and other officers were chosen by χειροτονία, not by κλήρωσις, since selection by lot destroyed the prerogative of age: see § 38, τῶν περὶ τὴν αἵρεσιν, κ.τ.λ.
