The men directly behind him seem to be constructing a temporary field oven, and in the background stands one of the Commission's supply wagons. The masts of the boat which has brought the delicacies for the soldiers to White House Landing are visible in the extreme background. This busy scene shows some of the practical good accomplished by the Christian Commission and how enthusiastically the women worked together with the men to alleviate the soldiers' woes.
