Academy of Sciences, National,

An institution incorporated by act of Congress March 3, 1863; comprising active and honorary members and foreign associates. Under the act of incorporation it is the duty of the academy to investigate, [12] examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art submitted to it by any department of the national government, the expense of such investigations being paid from appropriations for the purpose.
