Cartwright, John 1740-1824

Author; born in Marnham, England, Sept. 28, 1740; became widely known as an advocate of the freedom of the American colonies; and issued a pamphlet entitled American Independence the glory and interest of Great Britain, in 1775. In this he pleaded for a union between England and the colonies, but with separate legislative bodies. This tract, supplemented by his refusal to accept a commission in the British army on American soil, destroyed the friendship between Lord Howe and himself. On April 2, 1777, he recommended the King to use his power to establish peace with the colonies on the basis suggested in his pamphlet. He died in London, Sept. 23, 1824.
