Darke, William, 1736-1801

Military officer; born in Philadelphia county, Pa., in 1736; served under Braddock in 1755, and was with him at his defeat; entered the patriot army at the outbreak of the Revolution as a captain; was captured at the battle of Germantown; subsequently was promoted colonel; and commanded the Hampshire and Berkeley regiments at the capture of Cornwallis in 1791. He served as lieutenant-colonel under General St. Clair, and was wounded in the battle with the Miami Indians, Nov. 4, 1791. He died in Jefferson county, Va., Nov. 26, 1801.
