Eaton, Margaret L. O'Neill, 1796-1879

Daughter of William O'Neill, an Irish hotel-keeper in Washington; born in 1796, and after the death of her first husband, John B. Timberlake, she married John Henry Eaton, United States Senator from Tennessee. Upon the appointment of her husband to the office of Secretary of War, Mrs. Eaton was not recognized socially by the wives of the other members of the cabinet. President Jackson interfered, and demanded that Mrs. Eaton should receive the usual social courtesies. In consequence of these social quarrels, a disruption of the cabinet took place in 1831. After Mr. Eaton's death his widow married an Italian. She died in Washington, Nov. 8, 1879.
