Educator; born in West Newbury, Mass., Nov. 6, 1807; graduated at Harvard in 1827; appointed Latin tutor there in 1829, and Professor of Greek Literature in 1839;
and was president of Harvard from 1860 till his death in Chester, Pa., Feb. 26, 1862.
He is the author of Life of William Eaton in Sparks's American biographies, and many books on general literature.
