Noble, John Willock 1831-

Lawyer; born in Lancaster, O., Oct. 26, 1831; graduated at Yale College in 1851; entered the Union army in the 3d Iowa Cavalry, of which he became colonel, and was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers at the close of the war. In 1867-70 he was United States attorney for Missouri at St. Louis. President Grant offered him the post of United States solicitor-general, which he declined. In 1889 President Harrison appointed him Secretary of the Department of the Interior, and in 1893 he resumed practice in St. Louis.
