Towson, Nathan -1854

Artillery officer; born near Baltimore, Md., Jan. 22, 1784; was appointed captain of artillery in March, 1812, having had some experience in that service as commander of a volunteer artillery company; was sent to the Niagara frontier; and there, in 1813-14, performed distinguished services. He bore a prominent part in the battles of Chippewa and Lundy's Lane; also in the defence of Fort Erie. In 1816 he was brevetted lieutenant-colonel, and was made paymaster-general in 1819. In March, 1849, he received the brevet of majorgeneral for “meritorious services during the Mexican War.” He died in Washington, D. C., July 20, 1854.
