Wood, Benjamin 1820-

Journalist; born in Shelbyville, Ky., Oct. 13, 1820; received a common school education; bought the New York Daily news in 1860; made it the popular one-cent paper in the United States in 1867; was a member of Congress in 1861-65 and 1881-83; and wrote Fort Lafayette, or love and secession. He died in New York City, Feb. 21, 1900.
