Zipangi,

The island of Japan described by Marco Polo, a Venetian traveller, who visited China early in the thirteenth century. He described Zipangi as a beautiful and wealthy island in the Eastern seas, 1,500 miles from land. Columbus and other early navigators made diligent search for it. See Cathay.
