Longwoods, battle of

Captain Holmes, of the 24th United States Infantry, proceeded, Feb. 27, 1814, with a party of about 160 rangers and mounted men against some of the British posts in Upper Canada. At Longwoods, on the Thames, he had a very sharp battle, on March 4, with the British, who, after an hour of hard fighting, ordered a retreat. Their loss was sixty-five killed and wounded, besides Indians. The loss of the Americans was seven men.
