The inscription reads thus:--
Jesse Putnam, long known as the Father of the merchants of Boston; a distinction not claimed by himself, but accorded by others, in consideration of the intelligence, energy, and integrity, with which, for more than half a century, at home and abroad, he followed and adorned his profession.
He died 14th April, 1837, aged 83 years.
