note. This list of general officers, by brevet or otherwise, includes (I) those born in
Massachusetts (2) those appointed from
Massachusetts into the regular army (3) those serving previously in
Massachusetts volunteer regiments.
In many cases the brevets were conferred at the very close or even after the close of the civil war, but they were, in all cases here included, based in part at least on services during the war itself.
