snow lies on the ground unmelted, and what is worse, the commissary department has failed to furnish any rations for two days, except some flour. The river is frozen over here, and in two days more the Yankees will not need pontoon bridges. December 10.—I do not now anticipate a battle at this place, at least for some time. Do not be uneasy about my being ‘rash.’ The bubble reputation cannot drag me into folly. God helping me, I will do my duty when called upon, trusting the consequences to Him. I go on picket again to-morrow, and hence cannot write regularly. Three days later the attack was made. Standing behind the stone wall in the Telegraph road, General Cobb was struck by a shot fired from a gun in the yard of ‘Federal Hill,’ placed, it was said, beneath the windows of the very room in which his mother was married. The femoral artery was severed, and death soon ensued.
