1 the following is the official estimate of Pope's forces on the 31st of July; but in giving it the General-in-chief remarks that the figures are exaggerated, especially as regards Banks' corps, which did not in fact number more than 8000 combatants:
1st corps10,550948173013,228
2d corps13,3431224410418,671
3d corps17,604971290421,479
to be deducted, a brigade of infantry at Winchester25006,500
one regiment and a battery at front Royal1000
one regiment cavalry out of service3000

the three corps composing this army before the arrival of the Ninth are here distinguished by the particular number assigned to them by General Pope. As soon as they were mustered back into the army of the Potomac they resumed their former enumeration. McDowell's corps became once more the first, Banks' the Fiftn and Siegel's the Eleventh.
