[850-52] dē of is pluperf.; siððan, adv. -- Grendel's abode is vaguely identified with hell, cp. 756; he is even said to pass into the power of devils, on fēonda geweald 808 (in contrast with on Frēan wǣre, 27). No conscious personification is contained in the expression þǣer him hel onfēng. Cf. Angl. xxxv 267 f.
