"New York lies and British Errors."
Under this head, the Philadelphia Inquirer
and other Northern journals, denounce, in emphatic terms, the abominable fabrication of the New York Times
' correspondent in regard to an alleged insult to the Prince
in this city.
We have now some hopes that all the conservative and civilized portion of the American
community will be disabused of the errors into which they have been led by one of the most scandalous and mendacious journals in the United States
For the opinion of any others we do not care a snap.
We have some hopes, also, that the truth of this matter will also cross the ocean, and that the London Times
will do justice to a community which received the Prince
with respectful and universal courtesy.
We cannot expect it to retract its own calumnies of Southern institutions generally, which were elicited and provoked by the alleged insult to the Prince
But that is a matter of little importance.
If it will only acquit our people of being blackguards, we care not how much of a blackguard it may make of itself.
