Supplies for the South.
--Some splendid artillery harness is now being manufactured for the States of Georgia
, North Carolina
, at the extensive establishment of Samuel S. Cottrell
& Co., in this city.
They are neat and durable, and put up in such style as must give our more Southern sisters a favorable opinion of the ability of Richmond
One hundred and sixty-six sets have already been completed, and will bear the most rigid inspection as fine specimens of gearing.
The firm alluded to is heavily engaged in this department of trade, working a full complement of hands at their five-story warehouse, a few doors below this office, and having a factory full of operatives on Shockoe Hill — the two places requiring the services of seventy-five journeymen, whose work in the way of saddles will compare favorably with that made anywhere.
The firm spoken of are now putting the finishing touches on 5,000 cartridge boxes, 5,000 cap boxes and 5,000 bayonet scabbards, fabricated to the order of this State.
The Southern Express Company have also contracted for a large lot of harness to be used in the extensive carrying business which they design to inaugurate at an early day in the South
There is no reason why Richmond
should not become a great manufacturing city.
We are glad that people are waking up to a just appreciation of her merits.
