We give full details of the firing of the Massachusetts
ruffians upon the unarmed population of Baltimore
A more inhuman and cowardly exhibition has never occurred on this continent.
The ferocity of the soldier firing from the cars upon inoffensive spectators, was only equalled by the cowardice shown by some of their number in surrendering their arms to men who attacked them with no other weapons than their fiats.
But any weapon is good against a tyrant, when a man is using it. Another noticeable fact is, that, in the very first fight, the race which they have kicked up this great hubbub about, turned against them, and even Baltimore
negroes attacked the Abolition troops.
They will find, before they extend their travels very far South, that the negroes are a loyal race, and far superior to themselves in every good quality of humanity.
The time has now come when every man in the South
must prepare to repel the invader.
If we are true to ourselves — and who can doubt it — we shall roll back in a deluge of blood this infernal onslaught upon our hearths and firesides.
Our fathers of Revolutionary fame had greater odds to contend against than any we are called to encounter.
We do not believe that the race has degenerated.--We are full of assurance that the South
is about to exhibit deeds of heroism which will throw into the shade the brightest page of our Revolutionary history.
It is not enough to say that such a people as the South
, fighting for their honor, cannot be conquered.--They can conquer, and take vengeance, and a God of Justice, who has never yet deserted the innocent and the valiant, will fight upon their side.
