The Seventh Regiment New York S. M.
--We stated yesterday, on what we deemed good authority, that Mayor Mayo
had sent a letter to the commanding officer
of this regiment, (now in Washington
.) resigning his honorary membership and requesting the destruction of all mementoes of his acquaintance with it.--We understand now, from those who have the best right to know, that though such a letter was prepared, it was not sent and circumstances may intervene to prevent its transmission altogether.
In connection with the above regiment, we may say that on yesterday the framed parchment sent to this city by the 7th Regiment, in acknowledgment of the honor paid the remains of Laurens Hamilton
, one of their members, who was drowned in James river
, on the occasion of their embarkation for Washington
, en route to New York, was hung around with crape; a similar parchment writing, sent by the regiment to our Mayor
, was also draped in mourning — These evidences of amity between the citizen soldiery of New York and our own people have been hanging in the office of the City Chamberlain for three years and the sable drapery in which they are clothed is significant of regret that the recipients of such hospitality as they met with in Virginia
should be capable of making so base a return as to array themselves in arms against us.
