Gas Works Guard.
--It was proposed a short time since to form the operatives employed in the
City Gas Works in to an efficient military company, and furnish them with arms for the defence of the city property.
The plan has been carried into effect, the men presenting themselves promptly for enrollment and evincing the most praiseworthy spirit in combining their energies to resist the invader.
The following officers have been chosen:
‘
John J. Fry,
Capt.;
Ivory P. Hodgden,
First Lieutenant;
Owen McCabe,
Second Lieutenant.
A majority of the officers have seen service on the tented field, and are therefore not wanting in that experience which gives assurance of accomplishing the end in view.
On Friday last the company was attached to the 179th Regiment.
It numbers sixty-six men, all strong, able-bodied fellows, who would prove about as ugly customers to handle as
Lincoln's minions could desire to come across.
