Consumption in Boston.
--During the year 1859, 739 deaths of consumption occurred in
Boston, which was a decrease of 45 from the previous year.
As usual, the preponderance of female victims was large--430 to 309 of the male sex. Another fact, however, has not been before generally known, that 381 of the deaths were of persons born in
Iceland, while 244 only were born in the
United States.
It is an interesting fact to notice, that of the whole number of those born in
Ireland who died the past year, 1 in 5 died of consumption; while the deaths of those born in the
United States, from the same disease, were only 1 in 10.48.--Nearly 53 per cent. of those who died from this disease were laborers, tailors, traders, mariners and clerks.
