The Massachusetts Personal Liberty bill.
--
Judge Joel Parker, of the Cambridge Law School, an eminent jurist of
Massachusetts, has published a letter in the Boston Journal (Republican) of Friday, pronouncing the
Personal Liberty bill of that State clearly unconstitutional.
The Journal itself ably advocates the repeal of the law in question.--It candidly says:
‘
"The question put to the people of
Massachusetts this day is; Will you help your enemies or your friends?
or, broader and deeper still, will you preserve the
Union or destroy it?
We believe that the repeal of this Personal Liberty bill in
Massachusetts will be followed by like action in other States.
We believe that single act, without other concessions, and without any compromise of principle, will so strengthen the hands of our Union friends in the slave States as to place those States under their control, and that nothing short of it will do it, and therefore that Union or disunion depends more upon the action of
Massachusetts than upon that of
South Carolina."
