--The Board of Officers of this Regiment convened on Thursday night.--The general committee on the subject of uniform for the militia, militia laws, &c., being unprepared to make a full report, were instructed to give the subject further consideration, and the Board adjourned to meet again next Tuesday evening, when final action will be taken.
The efforts of the officers of the 179th to place the Regiment in a condition to meet any emergency, should be encouraged by every good citizen.
When the country was calmly at rest under the outspread wing of peace, it was common to hear the militia system derided, and propositions for its revival encountered the most stubborn opposition.--But even then the system had its friends among intelligent men, who foresaw that the time might come when its value would be demonstrated.
The cloud in the sky, then but a mere speck, now overshadows the whole land, but, happily, through the efforts of those who possessed almost prophetic wisdom, the enrollment of the militia has not been entirely neglected.
The first act of open aggression will be met by men who have their homes and firesides to defend, and the means must not be wanting.
If the officers of every regiment would bestir themselves as actively as are those of the 179th, the militia would very soon be ready to respond energetically to the call of the State
