--A soldier named Meachim, from Cumberland county, came to his death about eight o'clock yesterday morning, by leaping from the eighth story of the new addition to the American Hotel, room No. 112, next adjoining the Bank of Virginia. The body fell against the wall of the Bank building, a large pool of blood marking the spot. The remains were taken to the rear yard and placed in a coffin. Deceased was commissary in a company serving in Major John O. Wilson's Battalion, under General Magruder, and is represented to have been an exemplary man, not addicted to drink. His name was not on the Hotel register, he having roomed for the night with a friend. No cause is known to have existed why he should have taken his own life. The set must have been committed under the inspiration of sudden frenzy.

P. S.--The verdict of the jury of inquest summoned by High Constable Freeman, and presided over by Coroner Peachy, returned a verdict that the deceased accidentally fell from the window and was killed. His name was reported as Samuel W. Meacham. His remains were taken in charge by the undertakers, Binford & Porter, till his relatives could be heard from.
