--A soldier named Meachim, from Cumberland county
, came to his death about eight o'clock yesterday morning, by leaping from the eighth story of the new addition to the American Hotel
, room No. 112, next adjoining the Bank of Virginia.
The body fell against the wall of the Bank building
, a large pool of blood marking the spot.
The remains were taken to the rear yard and placed in a coffin.
Deceased was commissary in a company serving in Major John O. Wilson
's Battalion, under General Magruder
, and is represented to have been an exemplary man, not addicted to drink.
His name was not on the Hotel
register, he having roomed for the night with a friend.
No cause is known to have existed why he should have taken his own life.
The set must have been committed under the inspiration of sudden frenzy.
P. S.--The verdict of the jury of inquest summoned by High Constable Freeman
, and presided over by Coroner Peachy
, returned a verdict that the deceased accidentally fell from the window and was killed.
His name was reported as Samuel W. Meacham
His remains were taken in charge by the undertakers, Binford
, till his relatives could be heard from.
