Attempt at Highway Robbery.
--On Thursday morning, between one and two o'clock, as Mr. Isaac Burnett
, was proceeding to the second market, in this city, with a load of vegetables, he was stopped by three men, (in soldiers' clothes,) who inquired whether he had any eggs.
He replied, ‘"none."’ To this remark they gave the lie. Mr.
B. then told them that they might search the cart, and he would give them some of what it contained if they would not further molest him. He left the cart, to comply with his promise, when he found they had already taken a bag of snaps.
He was then seized and badly beaten by the ruffians.
B. afterwards reached the city, and was taken to the house of Mr. Perry Jones
, whither Dr. Trent
was called to dress his wounds.
He received two very severe cuts upon his head, from some blunt instrument.
B. is a very in offensive man, and highly respected by all who know him. He is now doing as well as could be expected, considering the nature of his wounds.
