The skirmish near Hawk's Nest.

--Col. J. Lucius Davis, in his official report of the skirmish in the Kanawha Valley, between five cavalry companies under his command and a body of the enemy, puts down the loss of the latter at fifty killed and wounded, and the same number of prisoners, while no one was wounded on our side. The Colonel awards the credit of this brilliant affair to Lieut. Col. J. N. Clarkson, and modestly places himself in the background. We notice this as a peculiar circumstance; for commanders int he field generally like to take to themselves as much credit in the event of victory as circumstances will allow.
