of Barges. A large number of canal barges have been sent from this city to points below for a purpose which we shall not indicate. The Government is fully aware of the necessity of protecting the rivers on both sides of the Peninsula, to prevent outrages to those perpetrated by the Yankees on the shores of the Rappahannock and the Potomac. That this will be done effectually, we have no doubt. The topography of the country in lower Virginia is taken advantage of by the piratical invaders on every possible occasion, and hence the necessity of close watching and constant vigilance on the part of our Government and people.
