Coast defences of North Carolina.

--We learn that the defences of the coast of North Carolina are being pushed forward with great expedition. Immediately after the taking of Hatteras, Capt. Charles H. Dimmock, of the Engineer Corps, was ordered to fortify Roanoke Island, and in a few days after his arrival he had a very formidable battery mounted and ready for action. Since then he has nearly completed another and still stronger battery, and one more, the third, will soon be finished, when that important part of North Carolina will be entirely ready to welcome the Federal navy. Capt. Dimmock, who, by the way, had just finished the strong defences of Craney Island, at Norfolk, is a son of that invaluable military man, Col. Dimmock, of the Ordnance; is a young officer of decided abilities, and deserves much credit for his untiring energy and skill.
