An important point.

--The importance of protecting, by an adequate force, Southwestern Virginia, must be too palpable to escape the attention of the Government. The Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, the salt works and the lead mines, would all be endangered by a successful march of the enemy to the Southwest. We take it for granted that so obvious a necessity as its defence against a Federal invasion has not been overlooked.
