Yankee Orthography.

--A correspondent of the Raleigh Church Intelligencer calls attention to the Yankee errors in the spelling of such English words as are derived from the Latin, and are come down to us through the medium of the French language. ‘"These words,"’ he observes, ‘"as a general rule among philologists, ought always to retain the impress of the language through which they have come down to us — usually receiving from that language one or more vowels, thereby indicating the line of their ancestry, and making more secure their history and meaning."’ He mentions the words honor, favor, color, et id omne genus, which should always be spell with the letter. ‘"Theater,"’ ‘"meter,"’ ‘"center,"’ are also Yankee innovations. We heartily concur with the writer in invoking the parents and teachers of the South to see that their children are supplied with books free from Yankeeisms and Websterian pronunciation.
