Exciting reports from the Potomac line.
It was believed, from information received at the War Department last evening, that the Federal
army had commenced an advance upon our lines in the direction of Fairfax
Intelligence was brought by passengers yesterday that trains were running between Fairfax
during the whole of Tuesday night, and that there was evidently some important movement going on. It was further stated that our troops evituated and burnt Fairfax Court-House, and fell back as far as Centreville
, seven miles distant. Half an hour previous to the departure of the train for Richmond
yesterday morning, firing was distinctly heard in that direction.
This is the substance of the news thus far received, and we forbear to mention any exaggerated rumors that we have heard.
It is the opinion of well-informed men that exciting events are at hand, and our leaders seem to be well aware of the designs of the enemy.
