U. S. Army and navy.

--According to the Army Register for 1861, the total enlisted men of the regular U. S. Army amounts to 17,005; aggregate, 18,122. There are a hundred and ninety-eight companies in the different regiments. The total regular U. S. Navy consists of seventy-four vessels. The large land and naval force over this amount, engaged in the present war, is composed entirely of volunteers and merchantmen converted for the time into war vessels.
