Penetrating the Nether region.

--A letter from Wirt county, Virginia, relates the following:

‘ A gentleman in the oil region in Western Virginia was boring for oil on his land, and, anxious to complete the job kept his darkies at work night and day. The nights were cold and a fire was built near the well.--About midnight they struck a vein of gas, which rushed out with great force, and igniting from the fire, shot up a great stream of brilliant flame one hundred and fifty feet in the air, illuminating the country round.--The terrified darkies broke for their master's house, and cried out: "Get up, Massa Tomkins, get up! we've broke through into hell."
